SAHMAT is organising a three-day seminar on the ‘Legacy and Relevance of the Progressive Cultural Movement in India’, on 13th, 14th and 15th
October 2011, at New Delhi. The seminar aims to be both a commemoration
and critical assessment of the work done by the Progressive Writers
Association (PWA), Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) and other
similar organisations that were set up in different parts of the
country, and of individuals associated with them, in the decades from
the 1930s to the 1950s. Against this background, the seminar will take
note of forms of interaction between contemporary politics and cultural
practice as they exist today in different fields of the
arts and literature, and in different regions of the country.
Venue: Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Teen Murti, New Delhi
